The Style

Neo-traditional tattooing grew out of the American traditional style but refused to stay inside its lines. It keeps what worked, strong outlines, confident placement, subject matter that carries meaning, and layers in the visual vocabulary of contemporary illustration. Richer shading, more complex colour gradients, expanded subject matter, and a sense of depth that traditional work doesn’t attempt.

At M.INK Tattooing on Main Street in Winnipeg, our artists bring genuine craft to every neo-traditional piece. Whether you come in with detailed reference images or a rough idea scribbled on your phone, we build the design around your body, your skin tone, and the story you want to carry permanently.

All work at M.INK is completed using professional-grade pigments, single-use sterile needles, and a fully autoclave-sterilized setup. Every appointment. No exceptions.

What We Do

Neo-traditional is one of the broadest tattoo styles in practice today. These are the approaches our artists work in most.

01

Floral and Botanical

Roses, peonies, chrysanthemums, and wild botanicals rendered with lush petal volume, natural colour variation, and the kind of dimensional shading that makes flowers look like they belong on skin rather than paper.

02

Animal Portraits and Wildlife

Wolves, foxes, ravens, big cats, and serpents are neo-traditional staples for good reason. The style lets our artists push expressive anatomy and saturated colour into something that feels alive without trying to be photorealistic.

03

Portraits and Figures

Human and mythological figures done in neo-traditional style carry emotional weight through stylisation rather than strict realism. Faces with character, deliberate exaggeration, and a colour palette that reads powerfully at arm’s length.

04

Illustrative and Storybook

Narrative scenes, fairy tale imagery, folklore subjects, and literary references all translate beautifully into neo-traditional. The style handles complexity without becoming cluttered and gives illustrated concepts a tattoo identity all their own.

05

Geometric Integration

Neo-traditional imagery combined with structured geometric framing creates a contrast between organic subject matter and architectural precision. Mandalas, linework borders, and sacred geometry all pair naturally with illustrated content.

06

Large Scale and Sleeves

Neo-traditional is one of the strongest styles for sleeve work and large panel pieces because its colour relationships and shading methods scale beautifully across body contours. Multi-session projects are planned as a single composition from the start.

How It Works

01

Consultation

Share your concept, placement preference, size, and any reference images you have gathered. We pair you with the right artist for your specific vision and walk through realistic expectations for timing and budget.

02

Custom Design

Your artist creates original artwork made for your body. Neo-traditional pieces require careful consideration of colour relationships and shading flow, so we build the design before anything touches your skin.

03

Stencil and Approve

The stencil goes on, you check the placement and sizing in the mirror, and you give the go-ahead before a needle is ever uncapped. Your comfort and confidence come first.

04

Tattoo and Aftercare

Our artists work with focus and care through every session. Before you leave, we cover full aftercare guidance specific to colour tattoos so your investment heals as vivid as the day it was done.

Why Neo-Traditional

Colour tattoos have a reputation for fading, and not without reason. What separates a neo-traditional tattoo that stays vibrant from one that muddies over time is the quality of the pigment, the depth of saturation, and the skill of the artist laying it down. At M.INK, our artists understand how colour behaves in skin across different tones and how to build a piece that ages with intention rather than against it.

Neo-traditional also offers something no single-technique style can match: range. The same artist who executes a delicate floral sleeve can build a dramatic full chest piece using the same foundational approach. Subject matter, scale, colour temperature, and mood are all adjustable within the style without sacrificing coherence.

The style rewards clients who want something genuinely custom. If you have a concept that feels too specific for flash work, neo-traditional is likely the right fit.

Our Artists

Neo-traditional work lives across the M.INK team. Mckala Farrell, the studio’s founder and owner, leads with large-scale, high-impact pieces rooted in bold colour and confident line quality. Tayler brings illustrative precision to animal and botanical subjects. Violet approaches neo-traditional through an ornamental lens with intricate detail and thoughtful composition. Lex works in the more dramatic end of the style with strong contrast and graphic intensity. Book a consultation and we’ll connect you with the artist whose existing work aligns closest to your vision.
