For style and aesthetic direction — absolutely. For replication — no. Copying another artist's work is unethical, and that's not how M.INK operates. Your references are a starting point, not a blueprint. What leaves our studio is original, every time.

Q: How long does the custom design process take at M.INK?

Depends on complexity. Simple pieces can be designed and booked within days. Detailed or large scale work requires consultation, drafting, and revision time — typically 1–2 weeks before your session date. M.INK doesn't rush the process — the design has to be right before the needle touches skin.

Q: Do I pay extra for a custom design at M.INK?

No. At M.INK, custom design is part of the process — not a separate fee added on top. Your consultation is free. Pricing is based on size, complexity, and estimated session time, discussed transparently before you commit. No surprises, no hidden costs.

Q: What if I don't like the design my M.INK artist shows me?

You give feedback and we revise. A custom piece isn't locked until you approve it. No artist at M.INK expects you to accept work that doesn't feel right — the collaboration doesn't end until the design is exactly yours.

The Style

Custom design is the foundation of everything we do at M.INK Tattooing on Main Street in Winnipeg. Every style we offer — blackwork, fine line, New School, large scale — starts with the same principle: artwork drawn specifically for the person wearing it. We don’t pull from a binder. We don’t resize stock imagery. We sit down with your idea, your reference, and your anatomy, and we build something that has never existed before and will never exist again.

Great custom work requires more than artistic skill. It requires understanding how a design will move with your body, age in your skin, and read from a distance over decades. Our artists factor all of it into every design decision — before you ever approve a stencil.

We use professional-grade inks and single-use sterile needles, operating in a fully autoclave-sterilized environment on every setup. The design process is only half the work — executing it cleanly on skin is where craftsmanship is proven.

Not sure exactly what you want yet? That’s what consultation is for. We take your references, mood, and placement and develop a concept direction before any artwork is committed — so the design feels right before it’s finalised

COLLABORATION PROCESS

Custom work is a conversation, not a transaction. You review drafts, push back on elements, and refine until the design is exactly yours. We don’t send you a finished piece and ask you to accept it — we build it with you.

COVER-UP & REWORK

Existing ink transformed into something you’re proud of again. We assess your current tattoo — age, saturation, placement, and skin condition — and design a new composition that works with your skin’s history rather than fighting it.

STYLE-MATCHED CUSTOM

Bring us a style — blackwork, fine line, New School, illustrative — and we’ll build a custom piece that lives authentically within that aesthetic. Designed from scratch, executed by the artist whose work best matches your vision.

ANATOMY-LED PLACEMENT

The design is only half the work. We assess how your concept will sit, flow, and age on your specific body before anything is stencilled. Placement decisions are made with decades of wear in mind — not just how it looks on skin today.

CONSULTATION

Tell us your concept, placement, style direction, and what the piece means to you. The more context we have, the better the artwork. This conversation is where everything begins.

CUSTOM DESIGN

Your artist develops original artwork built entirely around your brief — drawn for your body, your placement, and your vision. You review, respond, and refine until nothing needs changing.

STENCIL AND APPROVE

The finalised design is applied as a stencil and assessed on your body together. Position, scale, and flow are confirmed in the mirror before the machine is ever switched on. Your sign-off is the only green light we need.

TATTOO AND AFTERCARE

Flawless execution on a fully sterile setup. Before you leave, you receive a complete aftercare brief tailored to your specific piece — because custom work deserves the same level of care going out the door as it did coming in.
