Dermals, pocketing, and surface piercings sit in a different category entirely. These aren’t standard placements; they require a piercer who understands tissue depth, migration risk, and how your body moves over time. At M.INK Tattooing on Main Street in Winnipeg, Mckala Farrell approaches every surface procedure as a long-term investment in your body, mapping each placement before a needle ever touches skin.

Material quality isn’t optional with surface work. We use only ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium biocompatible, nickel-free, and built to last paired with single-use sterile needles and full autoclave sterilization protocols.

Surface and implant work demands more anatomical precision than any standard piercing. Mckala Farrell will assess your tissue depth, skin tension, and movement at consultation to recommend what will anchor, heal, and hold for you.

DERMAL

A single-point anchor sitting flush against the skin. Chest, collarbone, nape, and cheekbone placements each require individual tissue depth assessment to minimize migration risk and maximize long-term hold.

POCKETING

Jewellery sits visibly beneath a lifted skin pocket at both ends. A deeply architectural result bridge, nape, and finger placements are among the most structurally demanding and visually striking procedures we perform.

SURFACE PIERCING

Two entry points connected beneath the skin’s surface. We use purpose-bent surface bars in implant-grade titanium to reduce pressure points because bar geometry is the difference between a healed piece and a rejected one.

Single-use sterile needle, precise technique, implant-grade titanium fitted immediately. Surface and dermal procedures are methodical; we move with intention, not speed.

Aftercare AND Brief

We walk you through a full aftercare routine specific to your procedure before you leave, and we’re always reachable by phone or email if questions arise.

Aftercare

  • YOUR SKIN DID THE HARD PART. DON'T UNDO IT
Surface and implant procedures heal differently from standard piercings. We give you specific guidance based on your exact placement. The fundamentals are non-negotiable.
  • Rinse twice daily with sterile saline spray (NeilMed or equivalent). No soap, no ointments, no rotation — ever.
  • Avoid snagging clothing, bags, or seatbelts over the placement. Friction is the leading cause of migration.
  • Leave the jewellery completely undisturbed for the full healing window — dermals (3–6 months), surface piercings (6–12 months).
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel after showering. Fabric towels snag and harbour bacteria against healing tissue.
  • Downsizing at 4–8 weeks is non-negotiable. A shorter post reduces movement and gives your body the best chance to anchor properly.

Things to Avoid

  • Touching, pressing, or rotating your jewellery unnecessarily
  • Submerging in pools, hot tubs, or open water
  • Applying creams, ointments, or alcohol-based products
  • Changing or removing jewellery before fully healed
  • Sleeping directly on a fresh surface or dermal placement
